Snapchat Camera Not Working – Why It Happens
The Snapchat camera is more complex than your regular phone camera — it applies real-time filters, AR effects, lenses, and face tracking simultaneously. This means it’s more susceptible to problems than basic camera apps. Here’s how to fix every common Snapchat camera issue.
Fix 1: Close Snapchat and Reopen
Swipe Snapchat away from your recent apps and wait 10 seconds before reopening. Camera glitches are often temporary and a fresh launch clears them.
Fix 2: Check Camera Permissions
iPhone: Settings → Snapchat → Camera → Enable
Android: Settings → Apps → Snapchat → Permissions → Camera → Allow
After a phone OS update, app permissions sometimes get reset. This is the most common reason for a sudden black screen in Snapchat.
Fix 3: Restart Your Phone
A full restart releases memory and resets all hardware connections including camera modules. Many Snapchat camera issues disappear after a simple restart.
Fix 4: Switch Between Front and Rear Camera
In Snapchat, tap the camera flip icon to switch between front and rear cameras. If one works and the other doesn’t, it may indicate a hardware issue with that specific camera. If both fail, it’s a software issue.
Fix 5: Clear Snapchat Cache

Fix 7: Free Up Phone Storage
Snapchat’s camera needs free storage to save snaps and cache filter data. If your phone is nearly full, the camera may fail to initialize. Free up space by clearing other app caches and deleting unused files.
Fix 8: Delete and Reinstall Snapchat
Uninstall Snapchat completely, restart your phone, then reinstall from your app store. Log back in — your account data including memories and friends are stored on Snapchat’s servers, so nothing is lost. A clean installation resolves corrupted app files causing black screen issues.
iPhone-Specific: Check Screen Time Restrictions
Go to Settings → Screen Time → Content & Privacy Restrictions → Allowed Apps and make sure Camera is enabled. Also check that Snapchat hasn’t been blocked under App Limits.
Snapchat Lens Not Working?
If the basic camera works but lenses/filters don’t: clear cache (step 5), check your internet connection (lenses download in real-time), and make sure you’ve given Snapchat access to your microphone and motion sensors as well as the camera.
