Mobile Data Not Working – Let’s Diagnose
When your mobile data stops working, you lose internet access whenever you’re away from Wi-Fi — which is a serious inconvenience. Before calling your carrier, work through these solutions. The vast majority of mobile data issues are software-related and fixable in minutes.
Fix 1: Toggle Airplane Mode On and Off
This is the fastest fix for most mobile data problems. Enable Airplane Mode for 10 seconds, then disable it. This forces your phone to re-register with the cell tower and often restores data immediately.
Fix 2: Make Sure Mobile Data Is Enabled
iPhone: Settings → Cellular → Cellular Data (toggle ON)
Android: Settings → Network & Internet → Mobile Network → Mobile Data (toggle ON)
It sounds obvious, but it’s easy to accidentally disable this — especially if someone else used your phone.
Fix 3: Check Data Limit / Data Cap
Many carriers throttle or cut off data after a monthly limit is reached. Check your carrier app or account page to see your data usage. Also check Settings → Cellular → Cellular Data Usage (iPhone) or Settings → Network → Data Usage (Android).
Fix 4: Remove and Reinsert the SIM Card
Using a SIM ejector tool (or a straightened paperclip), carefully remove your SIM tray, take out the SIM, and reinsert it firmly. A slightly loose SIM connection causes intermittent data issues. Turn off your phone before doing this.
Fix 5: Check APN Settings
APN (Access Point Name) settings tell your phone how to connect to your carrier’s data network. Incorrect settings prevent data from working entirely.
Android: Settings → Network & Internet → Mobile Network → Advanced → Access Point Names. Contact your carrier for the correct APN values.
iPhone: These are usually configured automatically. You can reset them by going to Settings → General → Transfer or Reset → Reset → Reset Network Settings.
Fix 6: Select Network Manually
Android: Settings → Mobile Network → Network Operators → Search Networks → select your carrier manually. Sometimes automatic selection picks a weaker signal.
iPhone: Settings → Cellular → Network Selection → disable Automatic → select your carrier.
Fix 7: Update Your Carrier Settings
iPhone: Go to Settings → General → About. If a carrier settings update is available, a pop-up will appear asking to update. Do it.
Android: This usually happens automatically, but check your system update settings.
Fix 8: Reset Network Settings
iPhone: Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset → Reset Network Settings
Android: Settings → System → Reset → Reset Wi-Fi, Mobile & Bluetooth
This resets all network configurations to factory defaults. Note: Wi-Fi passwords will be erased.
Fix 9: Contact Your Carrier
If none of the above works, contact your carrier. Common carrier-side issues include: account suspension, SIM card deactivation, provisioning errors (especially after a new SIM), and network outages in your area. They can run diagnostics on your line remotely.
