Why Do iPhone Apps Crash?
App crashes on iPhone are frustrating but usually easy to fix. Before reaching for the factory reset button, work through these solutions — most people fix the problem within the first three steps.
Fix 1: Force Close and Reopen the App
Sometimes an app just gets into a bad state. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen (iPhone X+) or double-press the Home button to see running apps. Swipe up on the problematic app to close it, then reopen it.
Fix 2: Restart Your iPhone
A restart clears the RAM and gives all apps a fresh start. This solves a surprising number of random crash issues.
Fix 3: Update the App
Open the App Store → tap your profile picture → scroll down to see pending updates. App developers regularly release bug fixes. Running an outdated version could be causing crashes.
Fix 4: Update iOS
Go to Settings → General → Software Update. Sometimes iOS updates include important compatibility fixes that prevent apps from crashing.
Fix 5: Delete and Reinstall the App
Corrupted app data can cause persistent crashes. Long-press the app icon → Remove App → Delete App. Then reinstall from the App Store. Note: this will delete local app data, so make sure your data is backed up in the app’s cloud service first.
Fix 6: Free Up iPhone Storage
When your iPhone runs low on storage, apps can crash because they can’t write temporary files. Go to Settings → General → iPhone Storage. Aim to keep at least 1-2GB free. Delete unused apps, old photos (after backing up), and unwanted downloads.
Fix 7: Check for App-Specific Issues
Some crashes are caused by the app itself, not your iPhone. Check the app’s reviews on the App Store to see if other users are reporting the same issue. The developer may already have a fix in progress.
Fix 8: Reset All Settings
Go to Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset → Reset All Settings. This resets network settings, privacy settings, and more — without deleting your photos or apps. It can resolve deep configuration conflicts causing crashes.
Still Crashing After All This?
If a specific app crashes on multiple devices or after a fresh reinstall, the problem is likely server-side or a bug in the app itself. Contact the developer through the App Store listing or their support email and report the crash.
For system-wide instability where many apps are crashing, an iTunes or Finder restore to factory settings (after backup) is the nuclear option — but it almost always works.
