Mobile Hotspot Problems – Why They Happen

Your phone’s personal hotspot lets other devices share your cellular data connection. When it stops working, it can leave your laptop or tablet without internet at critical moments. These fixes cover every common hotspot issue on both iPhone and Android.

Fix 1: Enable Hotspot Properly

iPhone: Settings → Personal Hotspot → Allow Others to Join (toggle ON). The hotspot name is your phone’s name and the password is shown on this screen.

Android: Settings → Network & Internet → Hotspot & Tethering → Wi-Fi Hotspot (toggle ON).

Note: On iPhone, you must keep the Personal Hotspot screen open or the device won’t be discoverable to new connections.

Fix 2: Check Your Carrier Plan

Hotspot/tethering is not included in all mobile plans. Some carriers charge extra or require a specific plan for hotspot usage. Contact your carrier or check your plan details online to confirm hotspot is enabled on your account.

Fix 3: Toggle Airplane Mode

Turn on Airplane Mode for 10 seconds, then off. This resets the cellular connection that hotspot relies on. After disabling Airplane Mode, re-enable the hotspot and try connecting again.

Fix 4: Restart Both Devices

Restart both your phone (the hotspot) and the device trying to connect. Then re-enable the hotspot and search for it from the other device. This clears any stuck connection states.

Fix 5: Forget and Reconnect

On the device connecting to the hotspot, forget the hotspot network and reconnect from scratch. Connection credential caches can become corrupted and prevent successful handshakes.

Fix 6: Change the Hotspot Band (Android)

On Android: Settings → Hotspot → Advanced → AP Band. Try switching between 2.4GHz and 5GHz. Some older laptops and devices only support 2.4GHz and won’t see a 5GHz hotspot.

Fix 7: Reset Network Settings

iPhone: Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset → Reset Network Settings
Android: Settings → System → Reset → Reset Wi-Fi, Mobile & Bluetooth

This often resolves hotspot issues caused by misconfigured network settings. You’ll need to re-enter Wi-Fi passwords afterward.

Fix 8: Update Carrier Settings (iPhone)

Go to Settings → General → About. If a carrier settings update prompt appears, install it. Carriers push configuration updates that affect hotspot, VoLTE, and data settings. Missing updates can prevent hotspot from functioning correctly.

Hotspot Keeps Turning Off?

iPhones automatically disable the hotspot after no devices are connected for a few minutes to save battery. To keep it on: Settings → Personal Hotspot → Maximize Compatibility (turn ON — this keeps the 2.4GHz band active continuously).

Android: Go to Hotspot settings and look for “Turn off hotspot automatically” — disable this option.

Maximum Connections Reached?

Most phones support 5–10 simultaneous hotspot connections. If you’ve reached the limit, disconnect unused devices from the hotspot to allow new connections.
