Google Maps Not Working – Overview
Google Maps issues can range from GPS inaccuracy and map tiles not loading, to the app crashing or navigation not starting. Given how many people rely on Maps for daily navigation, these problems need fixing fast. Here’s your complete troubleshooting guide.
Fix 1: Enable Location Services
iPhone: Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → Google Maps → While Using the App (or Always)
Android: Settings → Location → App Permissions → Google Maps → Allow all the time
Without location permission, Maps can’t track your position or provide accurate turn-by-turn navigation.
Fix 2: Enable High-Accuracy GPS Mode
Android: Settings → Location → Location Mode → High Accuracy. This uses GPS, Wi-Fi, and mobile networks together for the most accurate positioning.
iPhone: Make sure Wi-Fi is on even if not connected — iPhone uses Wi-Fi positioning to improve GPS accuracy.
Fix 3: Check Your Internet Connection
Google Maps requires internet for map tiles, real-time traffic, and route calculation (unless you’ve downloaded offline maps). Test your connection by opening a browser. If it’s slow, that’s your Maps problem.
Fix 4: Download Offline Maps
In Google Maps: tap your profile picture → Offline Maps → Select Your Own Map. Download the area you travel in. This lets Maps work without internet for navigation, though real-time traffic won’t be available.
Fix 5: Clear Google Maps Cache
Android: Settings → Apps → Maps → Storage → Clear Cache
iPhone: In Google Maps: Profile → Settings → About, terms & privacy → Clear Application Data
Fix 6: Update Google Maps
Check for updates in the App Store or Play Store. Google frequently pushes performance improvements and bug fixes to Maps. Old versions can have accuracy problems and rendering glitches.
Fix 7: Calibrate the Compass
If your location is accurate but the direction arrow points the wrong way, your compass needs calibration. In Google Maps, tap the blue location dot → Calibrate → follow the figure-8 motion instructions. Also, make sure you’re not near large metal objects or magnets.
Fix 8: Recalibrate GPS in Open Space
GPS works best with a clear view of the sky. If your location is consistently wrong, step outside away from tall buildings and let Maps recalibrate for 30–60 seconds. Buildings cause GPS signal “multipath” interference.
Fix 9: Reinstall Google Maps
If all else fails, uninstall Google Maps (or disable/enable it on Pixel phones where it’s a system app), restart your phone, and reinstall from the Play Store or App Store. Your saved places and history sync from your Google account.
Pro Tip: Use Maps in Landscape for Better Navigation
Rotating your phone to landscape mode in navigation gives you a wider view of upcoming turns — especially helpful on complex highway interchanges. Not a fix, but a quality-of-life improvement worth knowing!
